Funeral Services Announced For Rutgers Student Who Collapsed During Basketball Game

Patrick O. Awosogba, 18, of East Brunswick died Sunday; counseling available for Rutgers students.

Funeral services have been announced for the Rutgers freshman who died this weekend after collapsing during a basketball game on campus.

Patrick O. Awosogba, 18, of East Brunswick collapsed Sunday while playing a recreational game at the Cook/Douglass Recreation Center.

Lifeguards on duty at the gym, along with police and EMS workers tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

His sister told NJ.com that he may have suffered from an undetected heart ailment.

An email set to the Rutgers community today said Awosogba’s family asked school officials to announce funeral arrangements.

Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 9 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 100 James St., South River.

The email described the School of Arts and Science student as a “ high-achieving student (who) was active in TWESE, the student organization of Africans and friends of Africa.”

“The Rutgers community is saddened by Patrick’s passing, and I know you join me in offering our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends,’’ the email said.

Counselors are available to students through CAPS (Counseling, ADAP, and Psychological Services) at 848-932-7884, at 17 Senior St., or at 61 Nichol Ave., New Brunswick. Students living on campus can also reach out to members of the residence life staff. Students who live off campus can reach out to the Dean of Students, the email said.

Awosogba was a 2014 East Brunswick High School graduate and played on the school’s varsity baseball team.
