Man Robbed Rutgers Student On Street In New Brunswick

The man first asked the Rutgers student to buy candy. The college student said he had no cash, and the man used his phone to transfer money.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A Rutgers student was robbed Tuesday evening in New Brunswick, after he was approached by a man on the sidewalk who initially stopped him and asked him to buy candy.

The victim, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, said he was approached by a man at about 7 p.m. near the intersection of College Avenue and Hamilton Street.

He asked the victim to buy candy from him, which he was holding.

When the Rutgers student said he didn't have any cash on him, the perpetrator used the victim's phone to complete a direct transfer of funds. Police did not say how much money was transferred.

It does not appear a gun or weapon was displayed. But the man displayed intimidating behavior, which led the victim to give the man additional items of value from his Livingston campus dorm room.

The victim did not sustain any physical injury during the incident. The suspect was identified as a stocky, 6-2" African-American man wearing a black jacket, black hooded sweatshirt with white stripes and black ski mask.

The African-American man fled in an unknown direction, said police. No injuries occurred.

The Rutgers University Police Department asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, contact the RUPD’s Detective Bureau at 848-932-8025.
