Cahill Beats Kratovil In New Brunswick Mayor Race

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — It was a resounding victory for James Cahill in winning his eighth term as New Brunswick mayor Tuesday, as he soundly defeated newspaper reporter-turned-politician Charlie Kratovil.

Cahill won with 77 percent of the vote, compared to 23 percent for Kratovil. Cahill received 4,995 votes to 1,480 votes for Kratovil. These are according to final, but unofficial vote tallies as of Tuesday night.

Cahill ran with the support of the Democrat party; Kratovil, pictured left, ran as an independent. Cahill has been New Brunswick's mayor seemingly forever, or at least the past 27 years, as he was first elected to the office in 1991 and has been mostly unchallenged every election since then.

Kratovil runs the popular New Brunswick news site New Brunswick Today and paints himself as a watchdog for the city. He has strongly criticized how Cahill runs the New Brunswick Parking Authority, which has gotten several black eyes recently for alleged corruption and employees admitting to theft.

Kratovil has said that if elected he would dissolve the New Brunswick Parking Authority.
