New Brunswick Police: Two Men Arrested In Connection With Sunday's Shooting

New Brunswick police arrested two men from Franklin and Edison on attempted murder and weapons charges.

New Brunswick police have arrested two young men in connection with one of the two weekend shootings in the city, authorities said.

On Tuesday, city detectives arrested Christopher Smith, 24, of Franklin, and Tywaan Bailey, 23, of Edison, in connection with Sunday’s Class Place shooting that left a city man and a 17-year-old boy injured, according to Capt. J.T. Miller.

Smith was arrested around 4 p.m. outside his home, and Bailey was arrested around 6 p.m. at his home.

Both men were charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Anthony Brown, 22, was shot in the hand and buttocks, and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest outside a Class Place home around 2:15 p.m. Sunday, police said. Both had been listed in stable condition at Robert Wood Johnson, police said earlier this week.

In a news release announcing the arrests, Miller said the investigation into the shooting led police to search vehicles and homes, and during those searches, police found a handgun and a “significant amount of narcotics, including heroin, prescription pills, and PCP.”

Bailey was also charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession with intent to distribute.

Police said they are continuing their investigation into the Class Place shooting as well as Saturday’s shooting on Mason Avenue.

In Saturday’s case, Shabazz Muhammed, 27, was shot outside a home around 10:15 p.m., police said. He had been listed in critical, but stable condition.

Police have also said victims and witnesses were uncooperative, and detectives were investigating the possibility that the two cases were related.
