New Brunswick Prepares For Major Winter Storm: Move Your Cars Off These Streets

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The city of New Brunswick is preparing as the biggest winter storm of the season barrels towards New Jersey.

These streets have signs on them that say "No parking when road is snow covered."

This will be in effect for the duration of the storm to keep emergency routes open and allow DPW staff to effectively remove snow. All New Brunswick parking garages will be open and free to the public to park there starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 until 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Also, due to the frigid temperatures overnight, a Code Blue will be in effect for the evening of Friday, January 23 through the morning of Saturday, January 24. This is to help New Brunswick's homeless population. The warming center at 6 Kirkpatrick Street will be open overnight between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Doors will close at capacity or 9 p.m. sharp.

The Dignity Center located at Memorial Stadium is closed until further notice due to maintenance. Anyone in need of shelter or other social services in the city of New Brunswick or the area is encouraged to call 2-1-1 for assistance.
The snow is expected to start at 1 a.m. Sunday and end early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest snowfall will take place Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. There will also be freezing rain and sleet, which will make driving dangerous. Ice accumulations will be around one tenth of an inch.
- Sunday’s road conditions will be extremely hazardous. Widespread road closures are to be expected.
- Monday's road conditions will be very difficult with plow crews working around the clock to clear the streets.
- Power outages are possible if widespread icing and or heavy snow occurs. JCP&L is prepared for this storm, as well as cable and internet service providers.
Most of New Jersey will see 12 to 18 inches of snow in the storm.
