Rutgers Food Bank Hopes To Help Their Own Students

It's the first food bank in the area specifically for students

Rutgers New Brunswick is opening a new foodbank to serve a unique group of people: its own students. Called the Rutgers Student Food Pantry, it is the first in the area to specifically help Rutgers students.

“People have an image of what they think a college student is,” the Director of Off-Campus Living and Community Partnerships, Kerri Willson, said in an article on the Rutgers website. “Many college students today are working multiple jobs to pay their way while taking classes. A dining plan is probably the easiest thing for them to cut out or cut short on if they are paying for their tuition.”

Food insecurity is an increasing concern for college students, and more than half of all community college students are unsure where their next meal will come from.

The Rutgers Student Food Pantry is located at 36 Union Street, a small home with a room acting as the pantry. Graduate, undergrad, on or off campus students have access to the nonperishable foods at the bank. 30 students benefited from the pantry before the school year even began.
