Rutgers President Salary: He Makes How Much?

New Brunswick, NJ - Rutgers University President Robert Barchi was awarded a $97,000 annual bonus earlier this month, after a meeting with the Rutgers Board of Governors, reports NJ.com.

This bonus, along with a 2 percent pay raise retroactive to July 1 of last year, brings Barchi’s annual salary to $676,260 a year.

While that number may seem high to some, how does Rutgers compare to other state schools nearby?

At Penn State, president Eric J. Barron was approved in 2014 to receive an $800,000 base salary, and he received a one-time $200,000 “transitional payment” when he first took office. That base salary can be reviewed annually at the end of each year throughout his five-year contract.

Before he stepped down in 2015, then president of the University of Delaware Patrick T. Harker made $728,329 a year.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher made $655,000 in 2015, making her the second highest paid public official in New York state government. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has criticized SUNY’s and CUNY’s salaries as too high.
