Urban Cleanup Week Kicks Off Saturday in New Brunswick

Events include Flower-up Friday, Sweep-up Sunday, and free compost and wood chip distribution for New Brunswick residents.

Urban Cleanup Week begins in New Brunswick on Saturday and runs until April 26.

The week-long activities include “Flower-up Friday” and “Sweep-Up Sunday.” Volunteers are needed for the various litter cleanups.

Here’s the schedule of events:

  • Saturday: litter cleanup at Mile Run Stream
  • Sunday: litter cleanups at various locations around the city
  • Monday: Make Your Storefront Look Great Day; business owners are asked to “take extra pride in their storefront windows and sidewalks.”
  • Tuesday: School Kids Sweep-Up Day; city fifth graders will remove litter from their school neighborhoods and participate in a clean city celebration.
  • Wednesday: Earth Day; residents can drop off unwanted paint, paint-related items, televisions and computers at the New Brunswick Department of Public Works, 400 Jersey Ave., between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Residents will also be given 20 free biodegradable leaf bags, per property, and free compost and wood chips.
  • Thursday: Tidy-Up Thursday; nonprofit agencies and houses of worship are asked to clean up litter on their properties
  • Friday: Flower-Up Friday; the Livingston Park Nursery, 1036 How Lane, will hand out two, free four-packs of annuals to the first 200 New Brunswick residents in attendance
  • Saturday, April 25: Large Volunteer Group Cleanup Day; groups will clean up litter around the city
  • Sunday, April 26: Sweep-Up Sunday; residents are asked to clean their lawns, sidewalks and curbs
