PISCATAWAY, NJ — The vice principal of New Brunswick High School was hit and killed by people drag racing their cars Saturday night in Piscataway, the Middlesex County prosecutor's office announced Wednesday.
The fatal incident happened this past Saturday night, Oct. 6. Tyrone Harrison, 49, of Somerset, who was a vice principal of the New Brunswick High School, was killed at approximately 9:17 pm on Stelton Road in Piscataway.
Harrison was walking from the Edison train station on route to a relative’s house when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the MCPO. The car that hit him fled the scene.

Harrison got his start as a math teacher and he was known at New Brunswick High as a teacher who didn't give up on challenging students, "especially those for whom others have lost hope," according to his bio on Project Exceed, a college-readiness organization based in Metuchen that Harrison was a part of.
Police determined that multiple vehicles were drag racing at approximately 9:17 p.m. on Stelton Avenue. One of the cars, a 2003 Honda Accord, hit Harrison near the intersection of Ethel Road. The driver fled.

Investigators believe the drivers are part of the “78 Imports,” a car club that participates in drag racing on public roads.
“This tragic death was entirely preventable and unnecessary. Drag racing on public roads is dangerous and irresponsible," said Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey. "Middlesex County currently has the highest rate of fatal car crashes in New Jersey. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Harrison’s family and the school community.”
Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to please contact Officer Robbins at (732) 562-7652 or Detective Berman at (732) 745-4328.
