Five more facts about the return to the classroom

New Milford students return to borough schools Wednesday after a one day delay due to the impact of post-Irene flooding.

In honor of borough students returning to their classrooms, here is the second of a two part series on Back-to-School facts:

  1. On average, public school districts spend $10,499 to educate both elementary and high school students, according to the US Dept. of Education. New Jersey is higher than the national average, spending over $16,000 to educate its students.
  2. More than 3.2 million students are expected to graduate high school in the United States this year.
  3. Graduating college? You are among 3.4 million Americans expected to accept their degrees in May 2012, according to the federal government.
  4. How much do teachers make? The federal government says the average is $52,800 for the nation's public school teachers with South Dakota paying the least and California teachers making the most. 
  5. More than 11 million students in the nation's schools speak a language other than English at home, according to the federal government.
