Students are in for a treat when they return to recess this September…the blacktop in the rear of the school has been repainted. The previously faded games and U. S. map are now vibrant and ready to be enjoyed again by the children.
The project originated last year by the Daisy troop run by Valoree Callegari and Tammy Hecker. They and their Daisies noticed that the blacktop could use some refreshing, so Callegari met with Mrs. Patricia Aufiero, principal, who approved of the idea. “I am excited to see the map and games on our blacktop being repainted!” commented Aufiero. “I appreciate the efforts of the parents to refresh this area for student use during recess.”
The project, led by Callegari, took on community support. Berkley’s PTO funded the purchase of all of the paint used. New Milford High School art teacher Lynette Betinni and the mural club gave their support as well by offering to help paint. In addition, some Berkley parents lent a hand.

“This was a great opportunity for us to do a good thing for the Berkley students,” commented Callegari. “And, we got to teach our Daisy troop a valuable community service lesson in the process!”
