Berkley School Spelling Bee

Welcome to the first edition of the Berkley Beat where you'll find out what's going on inside Berkley -- check this space next week for the Gibbs Gazette

Berkley Street School was buzzing with talk of spelling bees last week.  First, on Sunday Jan. 9, New Milford participated in the Oradell Women’s Club Tri-Community Bee. Then, Monday, Jan. 10, Berkley had its own Spelling Bee.

Participants for both spelling bees were determined back in December when each fourth and fifth grade class held its own bee. A winner and an alternate were appointed for each class.

On Jan. 9, New Milford students joined children from River Edge and Oradell to compete at Oradell Public School. The winners of the December classroom bees competed, but if they were unable to their alternates attended. Berkley student Russell Johnson won second place and received a $25 gift certificate. Gibbs student Jennie Shih came in third.

Mrs. Barbara Norton, Enrichment Teacher and Spelling Bee Coordinator, was pleased with New Milford’s performance at the Tri-Valley Bee. “Usually 30 to 40 students compete, so placing second and third is commendable,” remarked Norton. “Those are the highest rankings we have achieved in recent years.”

On Jan. 10, the winners and alternates of Berkley’s fourth and fifth grade classes all competed in Berkley’s own bee. According to Norton, it was exciting because the two finalists went on successfully spelling words for quite some time.

The winner was fifth grader Michelle Sydoruk. “Michelle was poised and well-prepared,” said Norton. “Her hard work paid off.”

Sydoruk will represent the school at the North Jersey Spelling Bee in March which is sponsored by The Record. The winner will advance to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
