If you are a Gibbs student and have a ton of books sitting on your book shelf collecting dust, then this is the week for you! On Friday, Feb. 11, the Gibbs School PTO is looking to help you with your book clutter problem as they get ready for the Second Annual PTO Book Swap.
Notices were sent home with every student asking them to donate any gently used books that they have finished reading and would want to swap with other children in the school. The students can bring as many of their books as they like and receive a ticket for each book they brought in, up to a maximum of five tickets will be given. Once the books are all collected, volunteers will separate them by grade level so that each teacher can send a few children down at a time to come and exchange their tickets for some new and interesting books to read.
Last year was the first time the PTO held the Swap, and it was a huge success. So many wonderful books were received, which enabled every child that participated the opportunity to find something different and exciting to bring home for free. At the end of the day, all the books that were left over were brought into the teacher’s room for them to choose books for their classroom libraries. It was a win-win situation for all those who participated.

In addition to this being a great way to promote reading to our Gibbs students, book swapping has become a greener choice for all book lovers. Here at Gibbs, we are trying to instill the “green philosophy” as much as we can and the book swap is showing the children the true meaning of “reduce, reuse, recycle”. The intent is to get these used books back into circulation for other children to enjoy, thereby creating less need for people to purchase new books.
So, start collecting those old books and let’s get our “BookSwap” on!
