Yesterday I took Anthony to his soccer practice wearing my new shirt that reads: Legalize Urban Chickens. I went to the bleachers where the other parents were and was immediately noticed. One mother asked if I was the guy with the chcikens and so began my speech about my attempt to raise chickens. I explained how I received a violation notice from the health department due to a neighbor's complaint. I told them that I asked the Board of Health to change the ordinance but they said no and I eventually received a $539 fine. I told them about these continuing blog posts and the articles here on Patch. I received no negative comments and, as a matter of fact, they all expressed interest in raising chickens themselves if I am successful in getting the ordinance changed. They were surprised to hear it is okay to raise goats, cows, horses, and even pidgeons. I really enjoyed telling my story and it was nice that everyone was so supportive. I will be at Monday's Council meeting to once again discuss this matter and to urge the council to form a Green Team as part of becoming a Sustainable Jersey community. I once again ask that you call or write the Board of Health and tell them you think raising chickens is good for New Milford.
