Backyard Chickens Part 2

This is the letter I sent to the Board of Health after my request to have the anti poultry ordinance changed was denied.

I sent this letter to the Board of Helath in response to their denial letter:

Dear President Slavin,

Regarding your letter dated January 6, 2012, I would like to thank you for the time you and the Board spent reviewing my request.  However, I would like to know why my request to have ordinance number BH:5-1.1 amended was denied.  The mission statement of the Board of Health reads as follows:

“The mission of the Board of Health is to be an advocate for the health of the public.  This mission is accomplished through the provision of appropriate services and the enforcement of applicable codes in an effort to maintain the health, safety and comfort of all residents.”

I don’t see how raising six hens in an escape proof enclosure would pose a health threat to any resident.  Currently there are no ordinances restricting the raising of cows, goats, or sheep or the keeping of bees in the Borough.  I intend to continue pursuing this matter by all means necessary.  I believe it is my right as an American to provide my family with healthy, homegrown eggs so long as the health and well being of others is not infringed upon.  I invite you and any other members of the Board to come to my home and see for yourself the conditions under which the chickens are being kept.  I am sure you will agree that these domesticated animals do not present any health risks to the general public.  I am not looking to promote farming in the Borough, rather a reduced reliance on mass produced, store bought food and a step closer to self sufficiency.  Please take a look at the Facebook page I created, New Milford Residents for Sustainability.  There you will find many links to stories about other towns that have recently changed ordinances to allow backyard chickens.  This is a national movement not just the whim of one local family.

If you support backyard chickens, please call or write the Board of Health and tell them what you think.  There is strength in numbers.
