I read a nice article in The Record today about a family in that is also fighting to legalize chickens. Every time I write about legalizing chickens I have to wonder: why wouldn't they be legal? It's not like I am wanting to raise bears or mountain lions. Oddly enough, there is nothing preventing me from rasing goats or honeybees. That is, nothing besides my wonderful wife. I can raise rabbits as pets and keep them in a similar enclosure. I can raise homing pigeons. So why is it I can't raise chickens? Is it unreasonable to want to provide my family with fresh, nutritious eggs right from my own backyard?
I am not talking about starting a farm on my 100' x 100' lot. What I am talking about is growing fresh vegetables, fresh apples, fresh pears, fresh figs, fresh wheat, and fresh eggs. As a father, I have a responsibility to provide for my family. Why can't I do that in my own backyard? Do the chickens bother anyone? I doubt it. They make hardly any noise. They don't smell. They don't run free. If they could make anyone sick it would only be me or my family since they are locked in an enclosure with no public access. Am I missing something? Someone please enlighten me.
