Free DVDs – Where????
Looking for a good deal for borrowing DVDs. The public library offers DVDs for free. All you need is your library card.
Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers, Bollywood, Harry Potter, and Twilight; what do all these films have in common?
All these films are on DVD and all are available to be borrowed from the public library. That's right the public library.
The New Milford Public Library has a DVD collection with over 4,000 titles available. There are DVDs for children, young adults, and adults. There are non-fiction DVDs to help you cook, exercise, plant a garden, or learn some history. There are Comedies and Dramas; Foreign Films and Classics; and some TV series too. Missed the Tudors on HBO, well Henry and his wives are at the library waiting for you.

And if the New Milford Public Library does not have the title you are looking for, chances are it is available at another BCCLS* library. Remember your library card is valid at all 74 BCCLS Libraries, which means you have access to over 42,000 titles. (That is not a typo, 42,241 titles to be exact!)
Now you know if it seems to good to be true there has to be a catch. And that is true with free DVDs from the public library. Each of the 74 libraries have their own policies about borrowing DVDs. So, please keep that in mind when requesting or borrowing a DVD from another town.

New Milford's DVD policy is as follows. All new DVDs, that would be anything we have purchased within the last 6 months, are Rental DVDs. Rental DVDs go out for 2 days and the cost is $1.00 for the 2 days and only 4 DVDs can be borrowed at one time. Return them late and the fee is $1.00 a day. Return them on time, no fee.
Any DVD that was purchased more than six months ago becomes a Free DVD. That means there is no fee to borrow that DVD. I'll repeat, no fee to borrow it. The DVD can be borrowed for 1 week and renewed 1 week if no one else is waiting for it. So, it is possible to borrow a DVD for free and keep it for 2 weeks. Please note that there is a late fee of a $1.00 a day, just like the Rental DVDs.
One policy that is true for all BCCLS libraries is that brand new DVDs do not have to be sent to another library. This is to allow the patrons at the library that owns the DVD to get new DVDs first.
Rental DVDs can be found in the lobby of the New Milford Public Library. Free DVDs are available in the main reading room and are arranged either by type of film, action, comedy, drama, series, etc. or in alphabetically order.
For the summer adults who read a book are eligible to win 2 free Rental DVDs as part of our NOVEL DESTINATIONS summer reading program. Simply read a book and fill out the raffle slip at the front desk. Drawings are every Monday morning from now until August 25th.
