SSshhh!!! If you are in the library you must be quiet! At least that is what most
people think. But is it really quiet in today’s libraries? I don’t think so.
Yes, we have our quiet spaces and yes, we don’t want to disturb the readers and kids
studying for exams. But if you come when story time lets out; or when the kids come
in for a drink of water from the field; or evenings when everyone is looking for a
DVD to watch, then the library is not such a quiet place. It can be downright
noisy! And you know what? That is not such a bad thing.
Yes, that is not a misprint, I, the New Milford Library Director, said it is not so
bad if there is some noise in the library. How could that be? Well, the public
library is a community space. It is a place for young and old. It is a place
for readers, listeners and watchers. It is a place to make a quilt, to write a
report, to meet your friends and neighbors, to attend a scout meeting, to vote,
to see a movie, to see some art…a place for all members of the community to gather
for one thing or another. And with all that going on it is hard to be quiet!
Now I am not saying the library is a place to come and make noise, just that it is
not as quiet as you think. I invite you to visit the library to see just how noisy or
quiet it can be.
Come and “check out” my blog each week for more fun info about today’s public
libraries.
See you at the library!
Terrie
P.S. “Check Out” is library lingo for what you do when you borrow a book from the
library. As in “I checked out a book from the library today.”
