Warning for Parents & Coaches About Similarity Between Football & Auto Injuries

Football generates thrills for spectators and unfortunately, occasional injuries to participants.

Football is one of the roughest and toughest sports on the planet. It attracts thousands of youngsters each fall. Football generates thrills for spectators and unfortunately, occasional injuries to participants.

“Frankly, I’m as big of a football fan as the next guy,” says Dr. Vic Naumov, DC, CCSMS of the Naumov Chiropractic Wellness Center in New Milford. “But my interest in the game changes to concern when there is an injury during the game or the even the possibility that one has occurred.”

According to Dr. Naumov, a Certified Chiropractic Sports Medicine Specialist, “any contact injury received on the football field is very often the same type as that received in an auto crash.” The body is struck or badly jarred, and the bones in the neck and back can be misplaced or sometimes even fractured. “When this type of trauma occurs in an arm or leg,” Dr. Naumov continues, “the fractured bone is set and nature in time heals the break. However, a misplaced or misaligned vertebra in the spinal column resulting from impact causing trauma to the tissue is not so easily detected and for more threatening long-term.”

Dr. Naumov explains that if one or more of the spinal bones is even slightly out of alignment, it can mean pressure on the nerves inside the spine and partial or complete paralysis or dysfunction of a vital organ, such as the heart, the ears, or any of the body’s muscles. “It can result in permanent spinal curvature later,” says Dr. Naumov, “which shows up clearly in x-rays of many of my patients.”

The Doctor of Chiropractic warns that while football is a fine builder of character and body, no football injury should be overlooked until a competent chiropractic examination and consultation has been performed. “Too often, symptoms such as headaches or digestive disturbances arise as a result of an neglected gridiron injury, showing up much later and without apparent cause in a young athlete’s life. It is important for parents and coaches to understand that if the spinal nerves have been pinched and the pressure has not been relieved through a chiropractic adjustment, health related troubles are sure to result.”

“As part of the great American fall tradition, football is certainly here to stay for generations to come. Unfortunately, there is always a price to pay for good things, and the price that football pays, says Dr. Naumov, is the occasional injury of the players.” He recommends that any injured athlete seek a complete and thorough chiropractic examination before he is allowed to return to his team and hit the field.
