Eighth graders at DEO Middle School recently participated in a career day, an event that students actually suggested in advisory meetings with Principal Whitney Perro and Superintendent Michael Polizzi.
Students heard from a variety of presenters including:
Keith Bachmann, current nominee for NJ Superior Court, former councilman, attorney and municipal court judge for New Milford. Bachmann talked about the education required to become an attorney and the types of law that are practiced. Perro said students asked many questions related to the criminal justice system.
Christopher Pendy, a producer and editor at MSNBC. Perro said, "Pendy explained that much of his job entails researching and confirming facts and information so they can be presented on air." Pendy warned students the internet is not always a reliable source and that there must be three independent, reliable sources of a fact before it can be presented on the news.
New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro talked about law enforcement and the different types of police work done locally. "Chief Papapietro shared how he worked with the Port Authority Police to secure the George Washington bridge during 9/11 as many experts predicted that would be the next target," said Perro.
John Mangiotius, owner of Mr. Cupcake, shared how as a 22-year-old with no money, he was able to purchase a bakery in Clifton and open his first store. "Mangiotius encouraged students if they were to open their own business to get your family involved as a key success for not only their support and patience," said Perro.
"The morning was quite informative for the students and we look forward to expanding Career Day even more for next year," said Perro. "Thanks to Mr. Petrocelli for helping to secure the presenters."
