Fiery New Milford DWI Crash Sends 2 To Hospital: Police

A Ford Mustang crashed into a doughnut delivery truck, which burst into flames, police said.

NEW MILFORD, NJ — A man was charged with DWI after he crashed his Ford Mustang into doughnut delivery truck, which caught fire, early Sunday morning, police said.

New Milford Police received several 911 calls about a motor vehicle crash at New Bridge Road and Old New Bridge Road, said Lt. Kevin Van Saders.

Lt. Brian Clancy and officers Bryan Mone and Andrew Lignos found a box truck on its side, engulfed in flames and a heavily damaged Ford Mustang, Van Saders said.

Both drivers got out of their respective vehicles before police arrived.

An investigation revealed that the Ford Mustang, driven by Juan Betancourth, 31, of Englewood was traveling west on New Bridge Road when the speeding driver lost control and went over the double yellow line and collided with a doughnut delivery box truck, Van Saders said.

The New Milford and River Edge fire departments responded and extinguished the fire, he said.

Both drivers had minor injuries and were taken to Hackensack University by HUMC ambulances and Holy Name Hospital medics.

Betancourth was issued several summonses, including DWI, reckless driving, and speeding. More charges are pending, Van Saders said.

New Bridge Road was closed for six hours during the investigation and cleanup, Van Saders said. River Edge and Teaneck Police, the Bergen County Sheriff's Office, and the New Milford and Teaneck departments of public works assisted on site.
