A Bergenfield man was arrested and charged with attempting to elude police officers after reaching speeds estimated at 90 miles per hour on his motorcycle through residential areas, according to the New Milford Police Department.
A police officer observed Edwin Ramos, 24, speeding on New Bridge Road on Sunday around 3 a.m. as he drove past on his 2006 Yamaha motorcycle, according to police reports.
Officer William Duby checked Ramos' speed by radar, which clocked him at 67 in a 35 mile per hour zone and attempted to pull him over, police said.

"The driver turned and looked at me as he passed and began to pick up more speed, ignoring my signal to stop," said Duby. "It continued to pick up speed as it blew through a red light at New Bridge and River Road going eastbound."
Duby radioed in a description of the driver and attempted to follow him.

According to police reports, Ramos then turned off New Bridge Road onto Prospect Avenue in Bergenfield, before nearly losing control of the motorcycle and then taking off at a high rate of speed, Duby said.
Duby estimated the rate of speed at 90 miles per hour or more, according to police reports.
Police said Duby was able to keep the tail lights and reflective strips of the driver's jacket in view and saw Ramos turn onto Reid Avenue.
Duby said he drove slowly on Reid until he observed some movement and saw Ramos pushing the motorcycle up a driveway behind some cars, according to police reports.
"I ran into the garage and knocked the operator to the ground away from the motorcycle," said Duby. "He was taken into custody after a brief struggle with the assistance of the Bergenfield PD."
According to police, Ramos said he ran from the officer because the registration was expired on the motorcycle.
Ramos was taken to NMPD headquarters and charged with the following:
- attempting to elude police in the second degree (due to the risk of injury or death to another due to excessive speeds)
- speeding
- reckless driving
- driving while suspended
- improper display of plates
- unregistered vehicle
- uninsured motorist
- failure to observe signal (two counts)
- improper passing
- driving without a license
New Milford Municipal Judge Kevin Kelly set Ramos' bail at $25,000. He posted a bond through a bail bond agency and was released several hours later, police said.
