Summer Fun at Gibbs School

Field Day and Gibbs Day were packed with fun for all students

Two big events, both full of fun, took place at Gibbs School:

Field Day:

This past week at Gibbs School has been all about fun, fun, fun!  We started off with the annual field day event on May 25 and boy was it a hot one!  The theme this year for the t-shirts and shorts was the Converse sneaker logo that the students chose a few months ago.  Every grade was a different color and there were three different teams.  We had Team Backo, Team Mongiardo, & Team Davies all racing to be the winner.

The entire outside area of the school was set up with all different games and there was even a game event set up in the gym, no space was wasted.  Our wonderful gym teachers, Mrs. Backo and Mr. Mongiardo always do a great job picking the games that the kids love to play.  The Potato Sack Race, Three Legged Race and the Sponge Relay are always a crowd pleaser, but the most popular game was Tug of War!  From Kindergarten to fifth grade, all the kids wanted to do was tug their hearts out.  Even some of the teachers got into the act.

This year was the first time that field day was held on a half day.  It really worked out perfectly, the kids were out on the field by 9 a.m., raced until 12:15 p.m. and then sent home exhausted, hot and hungry by 12:35 p.m.  As always, Field Day at Gibbs school was a big hit!!

Gibbs Day:

Just when you thought the fun was over, the Gibbs PTO brought back “Gibbs Day”, which was held on May 27.  This event has become a tradition for the PTO to sponsor during their final year on the executive board as a farewell party to the students.

At 8 a.m. the trucks arrived and unloaded six inflatables and a dunk tank in the field of the school.  Within minutes, the inflatables were blown up and the tank was filled with water transforming the Gibbs field to look like a carnival of fun.  Each grade was able to come out for 50 minutes and kick off their shoes to jump, slide and have a blast.  The class moms were also invited to help the teachers keep an eye on the kids while they ran around the field.

There were long lines at all the inflatables, but the dunk tank, which is always a crowd pleaser, had some of the longest – the students love to see which teacher or parent is going to volunteer to get wet.  Fortunately for our volunteers, the dunk tank was the best place to be due to how extremely hot it was that day.  A big thank you goes out to all our brave volunteers.

By 2 p.m., every student got a chance to come out and have some fun.  As a member of this out going Executive Board, it was very rewarding to see our fundraising dollars go to something that the kids all really enjoy.  It’s nice to be able to do something that is all about fun letting kids be kids even if it is for just an hour.  All in all, it was a great way to kickoff the summer time season!!
