Time Capsule Found and Opened at NMHS
After several years of searching, the capsule which was sealed in 1980 was finally unearthed
New Milford High School students, faculty and staff were extremely excited to attend the unveiling of the time capsule sunk into the front lawn of NMHS more than three decades prior.
Buildings and grounds staff led by Ron Stokes found the location of the capsule, which had proved elusive in recent years, Wednesday morning.
"They made an attempt several years ago and were unsuccessful," said NMHS Principal Eric Sheninger. "We had a map but it was a bit off and we finally found it today."

Office staff said the previous attempt several years ago came up empty despite approximately five different holes that were dug.
Sheninger made an announcement to students around 1:15 p.m. that they could come down to the front lawn for the opening of the capsule and shouts of excitement could be heard throughout the hallways.

Students, faculty, staff and district administration gathered on the front lawn as custodial staff first opened the large box then sawed through the tube containing the time capsule items.
A wide variety of things were taken out including newspapers from 1980 featuring the Iranian hostage crisis, toiletries from the late 70s and early 80s, old slide reels, sports memorabilia, NMHS yearbooks and much more.
The items will go on display at NMHS on June 3 during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first graduating class. Students carried items into the building to be stored in the library for safekeeping until the event.
