For the past six years, the 4th graders in New Milford have participated in a statewide writing contest called Celebrate NJ. For this contest, students choose one newspaper editor that they would like to become, and write a 200-word research article about New Jersey. This project is done in the Media Center, with the classroom teachers working collaboratively with Gibbs’ media specialist, Mrs. Novoshelski. As the reward for participating, every fourth grader at B. F. Gibbs School will receive a free ticket to attend the NJ Jackals baseball game on June 4th. There will also be a special Awards Night at the Newark Museum on April 27.

Over 8,000 students enrolled in the program from nearly every county in the state. Of the articles that were submitted by the Gibbs’ students, the contest judges selected 8 to publish. We are so proud of this accomplishment and would like to congratulate these students on their fantastic articles!  The students whose articles were chosen to be published are: Mikaela Santos, Nicole DiGiorgio, Shane Morgan, Sabrina Wilson, Ryan Lally, Madison Ryan, Melissa Bowker, and Luke Barden.

B. F. Gibbs students entered the class project portion of the contest, as well. For this, the students illustrated their topics using Microsoft Paint, merged them into a Power Point Slideshow, and submitted these as class projects, called “NJ is #1!” All four classes did such an incredible job on these projects that the judges selected them ALL as winners! Congratulations to each of the classes: Miss Zadigian, Mr. Carletto, Mr. Albanese, and Mrs. Ris!

All of these articles and projects will be displayed in the Celebrate NJ online newspaper in the near future. Make sure to check out www.celebratenj.org and see all of the reasons we have to celebrate!

Whiz Kids' Keys to Awesomeness: "Their key to awesomeness was their personal dedication and hard work, along with the strong educational foundation they have received over the years from their teachers at B. F. Gibbs School," said Novoshelski.
