Working at the Car Wash
Fifth graders from Gibbs and Berkley raised $1,300 at their weekend event
On Saturday, April 30, the fifth grade graduating classes of B.F. Gibbs School and Berkley School "car washed" their hearts out behind the Borough Hall to raise money for their year end social. The social has become a yearly tradition between the two elementary schools.
This year it will be held at David E. Owens Middle School Friday, June 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The evening enables fifth grade students to meet each other in a more casual setting before school starts in September.
The car wash flyers were sent out to students at both schools to notify the parents about the event and to give families the opportunity to purchase pre-order vouchers. Each fifth grade class was designated a time slot to work the car wash. Luckily, the weather cooperated this year and it was a perfect sunny day for the students at both schools to raise money and to have fun meeting each other.

The day began at 8:30a.m., with students and parents arriving at Borough Hall to set up the area in the parking lot that was used for the car wash. Cones were placed, signs were put up, buckets were filled and some of the fifth graders were standing at the corner on River Road trying to drum up business. By 9 a.m., everything was ready to go and the cars quickly lined up around the corner all waiting to have their cars washed by these very enthusiastic kids.
My daughter’s shift was at 12:20 p.m. and when we arrived, I think the kids were wetter than the cars. But everyone was having a good time and it was great to see so many people had come out to support these fifth graders.

By 2 p.m., there were still a few cars left to wash but it was time to close up shop. Buckets and towels were collected, everyone went home to put on dry clothes and at the end of the day these fifth graders raised about $1,300! They all worked really hard and should be very proud of themselves. A big thank you needs to go out to the Fifth Grade Graduating Committees in both schools for organizing the event and to all the parents that helped wash and dry cars throughout the day.
