Berkeley Heights Man Stole Millions From Employer: Prosecutor

A Berkeley Heights man was sentenced for stealing more than $4 million from his employer over the course of nearly a decade, prosecutor says

Berekely Heights, NJ -- A Berkeley Heights man was sentenced for stealing more than $4 million from his Elizabeth-based employer over the course of nearly a decade, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Friday.

Albert Thomson, 54, was sentenced to six years in state prison Friday before state Superior Court Judge Frederic McDaniel.

Thomson was arrested in March 2014 after Elizabeth Police Department discovered a pattern of theft from New England Motor Freight, a large trucking company, and two related companies, Eastern Freightways Inc. and Carrier Industries Inc., according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Vanderstreet, who prosecuted the case.

As part of Thompson’s job, he would register thousands of the company’s vehicles. However, from 2005 to 2013 it was revealed Thomson was putting in registration requests for vehicles that had already been registered. He would then pocket or spend the checks cut by his employers to cover the costs, according to Vanderstreet.

Thomson bought a Mercedes-Benz, rented a home at the Jersey Shore, paid for himself to have a personal trainer, and paid credit-card bills, among other things with the stolen money.
