Berkley Heights Fire Department Looking For Volunteers

The fire department posted a call for more volunteer fire fighters on their Facebook page.

The Berkeley Heights Fire Department is looking for more volunteer fire fighters to round out their team.

In a Facebook post on their official page, the department invited all eligible residents to apply for the position. The post also included a link to an Odyssey Online blog post called "Four Reasons Why College Students Should Become Volunteer Firefighters."

Volunteers are divided into to groups based on age. Those between 16 and 18 are invited to apply for the departments Junior Division. Junior Division members help with non-hazardous tasks, and are invited to a Junior Fire Academy program, held annually in Morris County.

Anyone between 18 and 45 are invited to apply to become a regular volunteer firefighter. All applicants must either live in Berkeley Heights or a neighboring town.

All new volunteers might attend a Firefighter-1 course at a county fire academy for 150 hours to be a probationary member. Once the probationary period is finished, an additional 100 hours of training is required in a Firefighter-2 course.

According to their website, the BHFD responds to an average of 800 calls per year, ranging from small alarm issues to large scale building fires.
