Hostage Scam Callers Reported In New Providence
The scam callers claim that a loved one was either in a motor vehicle crash or is being held hostage and then request money, police report.

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — New Providence Police are warning residents of scam callers who claim that a loved one was either in a motor vehicle crash or is being held hostage.
The police have taken a number of reports of these types of scam calls over the past couple of weeks.

- The caller uses a locally-based cell phone number as a ploy for the caller to answer the call.
- They normally request a small amount of money for the release of the loved one.
- They may also request a wire of funds or gift cards.
- In some instances, they will put someone on the phone to act like the kidnapped victim.
"Please let your loved ones know about this scam and to contact the police department if they feel they are being victimized," New Providence Police announced.
