Lesson for Mom Entrepreneurs: Public Relations 101
New Jersey Mom's Guide is hosting a public-relations workshop tonight help moms grow their own businesses — or prepare to start one.

A mom's job is never done, from shuttling kids to and from school and activities, to cooking, cleaning and washing clothes. But many women are carving out time to nurture something else — their entrepreneurial instincts.
That’s why the founders of the Westfield-based New Jersey Mom’s Guide created the Moms in Business Network. The group helps mothers who already own a business — or want to start one — by providing guidance, helpful resources and a supportive network for these busy multi-taskers.
Tonight, Melisa Tropeano-LaTour, the owner of Cranford-based MTL Communications, will lead a Public Relations 101 workshop. She will also discuss the tools business owners need to grow their business.

“She just has some great ideas that you can do from home that don’t cost a lot of money,” said Kate Motz, co-owner of New Jersey Moms Guide.
Matz and her partner, Christina Castro, know about great ideas. NJ Moms Guide has become a statewide tool for moms, growing up from the pair's original business model, Westfield Mom's Town.

Motz wants people to know that the Moms in Business Network is a diverse group that includes everyone from corporate professionals and entrepreneurs to stay-at-home moms. She stresses that all moms are welcome to participate in these events.
“There are lots of experiences that all these women can share,” Motz said.
The PR workshop will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Once Upon a Café at 19 Eastman Street in Cranford.
Matz said the program will feature tips for how entrepreneurs can generate cost-effective strategies for building buzz for their businesses. She says that many owners pay more than $1,000 to have someone do their public relations work. The workshop will teach moms how to strategize and implement their own PR work.
In addition, participants can enjoy a post-presentation wine tasting and network with other moms. The entrance fee for members of New Jersey Mom’s Guide is $12. Non-members pay $25. You can register online.
Motz said she and Castro recently hired someone to organize their meetings. She said they hope to host similar business workshops once a month.
