Restaurants at Lantern Hill Focus on Creativity, Collaboration, and Socialization
Resident Leslie Nies, chair of the dining committee, works closely with Dining Director Kate Stewart to ensure her neighbors enjoy meals

At Lantern Hill, an Erickson Senior Living community in New Providence, N.J., residents savor a variety of delicious dishes prepared by professional chefs at on-site restaurants.
"I love how each [restaurant] has a different menu. Plus, they have a daily special and another special that lasts for a week. The large selection is wonderful," says resident Leslie Nies.
More importantly, each made-to-order meal provides the opportunity for social connection. Whether getting to know new neighbors over dinner, catching up with a friend over lunch, or celebrating a special occasion with loved ones, dining is a highlight of life at Lantern Hill.

"I eat at all the restaurants to take advantage of the variety," Leslie says. "I do, however, prefer Chef's Table. It feels upscale, yet still comfortable."
"We are proud to offer such a variety for residents to enjoy," says Dining Director Kate Stewart. "Some nights, you may want filet mignon, while other nights you crave a simple grilled cheese sandwich. At Lantern Hill, it's easy to get both."
Made-to-order meals
Because every entree is prepared by chefs, residents can easily customize their orders.
"If someone asks for a sauce to be on the side or a different vegetable, we can meet those requests," Stewart says. "Executive Chef Chris Owen has a lot of individual conversations with residents to discuss dietary preferences and needs. At times, we've even been able to serve items that are not on the menu as an accommodation."
"Chef Chris is fantastic and so easy to work with, especially for those with dietary restrictions," notes Leslie. "The chefs are also careful about those with allergies."
Powerful partnership
To ensure residents continue to enjoy five-star meals, Stewart and her team partner with the Resident Advisory Council's dining committee to identify strengths and ways to improve.
Leslie, who chairs the committee, is honored to represent her neighbors. "We have 26 people on the committee," she says. "Once a month, the committee meets to gather resident feedback. I also get emails from residents noting areas of improvement as well as positive experiences."
She continues, "Sometimes, it is the small things. For example, some residents commented that they wanted elevated bread service with house-whipped butter, and it was done. Other suggestions from the committee that have been implemented are that four ice cream flavors are always available, a pizza program was launched, and grab-and-go offerings have been added to the marketplace."
Leslie notes that the committee has also been working with Owen to add more healthy options and vegetables to restaurant menus. "We are the Garden State, after all," she says, with a laugh.
"It's this partnership that makes the dining experience at Lantern Hill so successful," says Stewart.
Fun and friendship
For Leslie, what really makes mealtime shine at Lantern Hill is the vibrant, social atmosphere. "You meet so many new people at the restaurants--residents and staff alike. Everyone is so friendly here," she says.
She adds that the community's holiday and themed events are also very popular. "We have had a pig roast on the patio, lobster-tail dinners, and holiday events for St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mardi Gras, Valentine's Day, and many more."
The dining team creates festive menus for each event and adds decorations, resulting in a fun time for everyone.
"From fun events to everyday dinners, dining plays an important role in life at Lantern Hill," says Stewart. "It allows residents to come together, share experiences, and build meaningful connections with each other."
