Library to Host Student Art Exhibition
The Tuesday open house at the library will feature music and art from students around Oakland schools.

Art from around Oakland's schools will adorn the walls of the library next week, as part of the library's fourth annual spring student art exhibit.
A reception for the exhibit will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The event is free to the public and will include music from Sydney and Noah Lee, two student cellists from Valley Middle School.
"It's a big event. All the parents, families, and other students come to see the art," library director Abby Sanner said.

"This is a part of our partnership with the Oakland schools," she continued. "The library's really been trying to do a lot to support the schools, and the schools are working increasingly closely with the library."
Other initiatives the library has taken with the schools include a summe reading program and a campaign to register kindergarten students with library cards.

Art was selected from students at the middle school, as well as fourth and fifth graders in special art programs at the elementary schools, by their teachers, and Sanner said in past years around 50 students have usually participated.
"It's a chance for the kids to shine and the teachers to shine," Sanner said. "The teachers spent an enormous amount of time getting the exhibit up."
