Man Dies During Jersey Shore Triathlon
The swimmer, who was described as being in his 70s, was near the finish line when he was "spotted in distress," triathlon officials said.
LOWER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Delaware man in his 70s died Sunday while competing in a popular Jersey Shore triathlon, according to a statement from event officials.
The man, of Wilmington, Delaware, was swimming in the Open Water Classic competition of the Escape The Cape triathlon when he was “spotted in distress” by lifeguards around 8:30 a.m. near the finish line, DelMoSports LLC said in a statement.
The man was transported to a beach in Lower Township near David Douglass Sr. Memorial Park where CPR was administered by emergency services, DelMoSports said. He was then taken to Cape Regional Medical Center via on-site ambulance.

“I’m heartbroken,” said Stephen DelMonte, CEO of DelMoSports LLC. “DelMoSports and USA Triathlon lost a member of its beloved community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
An autopsy is expected to be performed by the medical examiner, according to the statement.
