Mascot Race Adds a Little Fun to Nor'easters Action
Sunday during halftime of an amateur soccer game, local mascots raced for a golden soccer ball.
Steve Thurlby, director of PDL operations for the Ocean City Nor'easters, says he's still getting used to the concept of halftime entertainment.
The native of Fleet, England, wonders what could be more entertaining than some of the best amateur soccer in the nation.
But Thurlby was told this is the U.S. and that fans expect a little gimmickry, so he did an admirable job in organizing a fan favorite: the annual mascot race to raise money for the United Way.

Six mascots competed by first dancing to the Cha Cha Slide, then running while attempting to jump over hurdles. Most of the mascots went around the obstacles, however some just knocked them down.
Wonder Bear, the Wetlands Institute, Jilly's, the Fractured Prune, ACUA and the Nor'Easter's mascots competed. Scute the Terrapin from the Wetland's Institute won the race—with the Fractured Prune in second and Bobby from the Nor'easters in third.
