Jersey Shore Beach Report: Sunshine Awaits For Days On The Sand

The beach season is picking up nicely with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures.

Looking for some sunshine and a day to relax? This weekend at the Jersey Shore should fit in perfectly.

Here is a look from Patch at the beach forecast for the weekend of June 19-21.

The National Weather Service is calling for sunshine from laer in the day Friday through Sunday, with some clouds and showers moving in late Sunday to start the week on Monday. Bring your sunscreen and your fly repellent — west winds are in the forecast.

There also is a high risk of rip currents, so if you insist on going in the water, which is still very cold, only go in where there are lifeguards present. Do not swim after hours. Read up on what to look for to identify rip currents: Rip Currents In NJ: What To Look For, How To Survive Them

JELLYFISH: Clinging jellyfish are thick in the bays and estuaries, according to Paul Bologna, the Montclair State biology professor and jellyfish expert. A 6-year-old girl was stung while swimming in the Metedeconk River in Brick, and there are reports in the New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group that people have encountered them in Barnegat Bay at Tices Shoal.

Clinging jellyfish live in aquatic vegetation such as sea lettuce and algae, and people should be careful about wading or swimming in those areas. They do not inhabit ocean beaches.

If you're headed to the beach, bring some white vinegar and some calamine lotion to treat jellyfish stings. Bologna's tips: Apply white vinegar immediately. This stops any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles. Rinse the sting area with the salt water you are in to wash away tentacles. "Do not use bottled water to rinse as osmotic shock will cause stinging cells left behind to fire and continue to sting," he says. Wipe the area clean with a clean towel or cloth. A hot compress applied to the sting area helps neutralize the toxins that cause the sting. Benadryl or calamine lotion can help with itching, and over-the-counter pain medicines can be used for pain from the stings depending on the severity.
