Ocean City Schools Rank No. 1 In Cape May County

Here's where the Ocean City School District placed in Niche's latest school rankings.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The Ocean City School District ranks 74th in New Jersey, according to data compiler Niche. Niche released its rankings for the 2019-2020 school year on Monday as part of the website's 2020 K-12 rankings.

Each New Jersey district received a letter grade in the following categories: Academics; Diversity; Teachers; College Prep; Clubs & Activities; Health & Safety; Administration; Sports; Food; and Resources & Facilities.

Ocean City ranked higher than any Cape May County school district. The district received the following grades:

  • overall: A
  • academics: A-
  • teachers: A
  • clubs and activities: A
  • administration: B-
  • food: A+
  • diversity: C
  • college prep: A
  • health and safety: A
  • sports: B
  • resources and facilities: A+

The Ocean City School District has a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1, according to Niche. Forty percent of students are at least proficient in math, while 55 percent are at least proficient in reading, Niche says.

To arrive at the rankings, Niche looked at data from the U.S. Department of Education as well as test scores, college data, and ratings collected from Niche users. (You can read more about the methodology here.)

Ocean City also holds the following state rankings on Niche:

  • best places to teach: 19 of 377
  • safest school districts: 48 of 377
  • districts with the best teachers: 49 of 377

The New Jersey Department of Education named the Ocean City School District a Lighthouse District last week. The Lighthouse District Initiative recognizes New Jersey schools that demonstrate progress across diverse groups of learners.

"I am proud to celebrate the work of the community of educators who support students each day," Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Taylor said in a statement. "I am most fortunate to be working with such an outstanding leadership team and faculty, who strive every day to ensure that we scaffold our work to best address the needs of our students in meeting and exceeding our high expectations for them.”
