Ocean City Seeks Volunteers for Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission in Ocean City is seeking volunteers to help identify and protect historic sites and structures.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City is seeking volunteers to serve on its Historic Preservation Commission. The commission holds its meetings on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The deadline for applications is Feb. 18, 2026.

The Historic Preservation Commission identifies and records buildings, sites, places, landmarks and structures of historical or architectural significance. The commission also helps the public understand the value of these sites and preservation techniques.

Commission members make recommendations to the Planning Board and City Council. These recommendations cover the Historic Preservation Element of the Master Plan and the historic preservation implications of other plan elements. They also advise on development and zoning applications for properties within the local historic district.

Additional responsibilities include reviewing permit applications that affect designated historic districts and sites. The commission provides written reports to the Administrative Officer. It also offers advisory, educational and informational services to promote historic preservation efforts within the city.

The commission drafts and recommends ordinances or amendments to existing ordinances to the City Council and Planning Board. These aim to resolve conflicts between design standards of the Historic Preservation Ordinance and the city's building or zoning regulations. They also advise on proposals involving public funds for restoration and preservation projects.

Volunteers assist city officers, employees, and various boards on matters impacting historic buildings, places, structures, and districts. The commission cooperates with local, county, state, and national historical societies and governmental bodies. They recommend recognition of historic districts, buildings, landmarks and structures to applicable agencies, including reviewing National Register nominations.
