Woman Hanging Dolls In Cape May Co. Identified: Prosecutor

Authorities have identified the woman who was seen hanging dolls above a Black congressional candidate's sign on Election Day.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, NJ — The woman who had been seen hanging dolls above a political sign for Tim Alexander has been identified, Cape May County officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was seen on surveillance footage on Election Day hanging three dolls above a sign for Alexander, who is Black, officials said. The incident was being investigated as a bias incident and was forwarded to the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice- Bias Crime Unit. She has since been identified as a 36-year-old woman from Rio Grande, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland said.

According to her family members, she suffers from behavioral health issues and has been treated in the past for those, Sutherland said.

Sutherland said that given the facts and circumstances, the investigation found that the incident was not a bias intimidation crime and no charges will be filed at this time.

Alexander was contacted by the Prosecutor's Office and advised of the outcome. He said was very appreciative of the detectives from Middle Township and the Prosecutor's Office and agrees with and accepts the decision not to charge at this time.

“This office has and will continue to thoroughly investigate any claims of Bias Intimidation based on race, color, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, nationality or ethnicity in accordance with the strict laws in New Jersey and I encourage anyone who has witnessed an act of Bias Intimidation or feels they were a victim of any Bias Intimidation to come forward and report the incident to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at (609) 465-1135,” Sutherland said.
