Borough Receives Funds for Stream Cleanups

The Borough will use grant money for its annual Clean Communities Day, when local volunteer groups clean Paramus streams.

The state is giving Paramus money to clean garbage out of its streams.

The state Department of Environmental Protection awarded $37,976.25 in Clean Communities grant money.

The money will be used for the annual Clean Communities Day in Paramus, Guy Picone, superintendent of public works for the Borough, said. During Clean Communities Day, typically held on a Saturday, volunteer organizations, typically Boy and Girl Scouts, help clean litter and sort recyclable material at Paramus streams.

The funds pay for equipment and materials used during the day, Picone said. The money also helps pay for additional workers during the summer who are dedicated to cleaning streams.

"We clean up all the brooks and streams within the year," Picone said. "We try to get to all of them."
