Borough to borrow money to pay for tax appeals

The borough will borrow nearly $2 million to help pay for tax appeals.

In a final vote, the Council approved an ordinance to bond for $1.8 million at their Tuesday meeting.

A $500,000 payment is due immediately, and the borough owes another $1.3 million in appeals as well.

There are more appeals to come. Former Councilman Alan Brundage said there are currently 150 tax appeals pending against the borough, which could lead to an extra $1 million in payments.

"They're coming at such a fast pace, we can't keep up," Brundage said.

Residents and business owners file property tax appeals when they believe their properties are assessed as too valuable by the government. If they succeed, municipalities have to pay back the excess taxes they collected.
