Is Full-Day Kindergarten Really Such a Good Thing?

For working parents especially, it's hard to imagine life without full-day kindergarten, but is a half-day program possibly better for children that age?

When the school board announced that free, full-day kindergarten could end in light of potential budget cuts, many parents panicked. 

It was one of many possible reductions under consideration, but one that would have a widespread impact, particularly for families in which both parents work.

But in New Jersey, kindergarten, of any kind, isn't required at all. We're one of six states that don't mandate it.

How important is full-day kindergarten? Is it critical? Or something kids--and parents--can do without?

Many studies show the benefits of a full-day program, mainly better math and reading scores.  But other studies suggest the benefits are short-lived and fade after grade three.
