Melissa Ryan Shines the Light on The Longest Day

Boonton resident raising awareness and funds in fight to end Alzheimer's

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater New Jersey Chapter (AAGNJ), the leading volunteer-driven health organization in Alzheimer's care, support, advocacy and research, is highlighting inspiring stories and contributions from people making a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

With more than 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia, and more than 11 million family and friends providing care and support for them, individuals across the country are seeking ways to assist those afflicted with the disease. In New Jersey alone, there are nearly 190,000 people living with the Alzheimer’s and 272,000 caregivers. The Longest Day (TLD), held annually on June 20, the summer solstice, continues through August 31, raising awareness and funds to help end the disease.

Today we say thank you to Melissa Ryan, of Boonton, who is living with younger onset Alzheimer’s. "Melissa is inspiring all of us by walking 500 miles to raise awareness of Alzheimer's and dementia. Melissa is a three-time Solstice Champion, a group of elite fundraisers who raise $1600 or more in a single season for Alzheimer's care, support, and research. We are incredibly lucky to have champions like Melissa by our side to help us in the fight to end Alzheimer’s”, said Emilie Pulecio, TLD Manager, AAGNJ.

Melissa, explains, “I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2020. Since then, I have teamed up with neurologists at New York-Presbyterian and enrolled in a clinical trial in the hope of extending my cognitive health. As you can imagine this diagnosis has changed every aspect of my life. I committed to walk a minimum of 500 miles in June – Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month - to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and show support for the millions of Americans living with it, and their families. Every year, I conclude my walk with a very large party at a local pub that raises a fair amount of donations. I urge everyone to stand up to the darkness and shine a light on Alzheimer’s. Make a donation today to help support the mission of the Alzheimer's Association and all those impacted by the disease. Thank you!”
