New Superintendent Hired For Parsippany Schools

Dr. Barbara Sargent comes to the district from Readington Township.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — Dr. Barbara Sargent has been hired as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Parsippany-Troy Hills school district, the Board of Education said in a press release.

Sargent has been working in education for more than 30 years, and has previously worked as the Superintendent of Schools in Readington Township, and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in Madison. She was selected unanimously out of seven candidates, the Board said.

“We congratulate Dr. Sargent on her appointment, and we are confident that her vast experience, deep knowledge of curriculum, management skills and love of education will both nurture and expand the quality of education throughout the district," the Parsippany-Troy Hills Board of Education said in a statement.

She'll start sometime between July 1 and August 1, depending on when her current contact ends.

According to the press release, Dr. Sargent earned a Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, a Master’s degree from Rider University in Reading/Language Arts, and a Doctorate from Seton Hall University in Educational Administration and Supervision.

Sargent's appointment comes amid controversy over the Board of Education's decision to eliminate the reading and writing program in the middle schools, and fourteen teachers.
