Red Lights May Be Added to Fire Department Connections Throughout Parsippany
Additions would be continuously illuminated for firefighters to reach connections quicker.

If the Parsippany council approves an ordinance currently up for a second reading this month, all fire department connections in the township will be outfitted with a continuously illuminated light for firefighters to see.
The amendment to the standing ordinance notes, “All new and existing fire department connections shall be designated with a light containing a red lens which shall remain continuously illuminated and shall be approved by the Fire Official or his designee prior to installation.”
The amendment goes on to say owners of buildings with existing fire department connections will be notified by the Division of Fire Prevention and be given 60 days to comply with the terms of the ordinance.

An explanation confirmed a fire department connection is the intake pipe on the outside of a building that fire departments can connect to in order to supply the building’s fire sprinkler system.
“The red light is designed to provide the fire department with the ability to locate the connections quickly in the case of a fire,” the explanation to council members read.

The lights require minimum maintenance, according to the amendment.
A second reading and potential passage of the change is scheduled for the council’s Feb. 24 meeting at Parsippany Town Hall.
