Unions Split Endorsements Between Michael Soriano, James Barberio Tickets In Parsippany
Who do unions back in Parsippany's mayoral and Township Council elections? It depends on which you ask.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — If you're looking toward unions to help you make decisions in Parsippany's upcoming elections, you'll find different answers. Several unions have backed Mayor Michael Soriano's Democratic ticket, but former Mayor James Barberio's Republican slate picked up a union endorsement Wednesday.
Barberio's team, which includes council hopefuls Justin Musella and Frank Neglia, earned an endorsement Wednesday from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825.
The union represents about 8,200 workers in New Jersey and New York. IUOE Local 825 also endorsed the Republican slates for the Morris County Board of Commissioners and the state legislature in New Jersey's 25th Legislative District.

“As Mayor, Jamie Barberio prioritized smart development, working with all parties involved and was committed to including the most highly skilled work force on major infrastructure projects," IUOE Local 825 Business Manager Greg Lalevee said in a statement. "That is a model elected official we were and still are proud to support. Along with his team, Justin Musella and Frank Neglia, Parsippany will be in good hands under their leadership. We are proud to endorse their election.”
But last week, Soriano's team earned the backing of the local teacher's union — the Parsippany-Troy Hills Education Association — and the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters. Soriano is running with council candidates Cori A. Herbig and Judith Hernandez.

“Working-class families in Parsippany have an opportunity to elect a team who will stand up for the issues that truly affect them,” William C. Sproule, executive secretary-treasurer of the carpenter's union, told New Jersey Globe. “This joint endorsement between the EAS Carpenters and the PTHEA is an effort for these families to have a stronger voice on Election Day. Solidarity means looking out for each other, and the carpenters and teachers in Parsippany understand that Mayor Soriano and his team will be advocates for the issues they care about.”
The candidates will participate in virtual debates before the Nov. 2 election. The mayoral debate will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 14, while the council debate will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 15. Read more: Debates Set For Parsippany Mayor, Township Council Candidates
