📰 News we're reading

1. NJ, Feds Sue Commission to Protect Drinking Water From Contamination (ridgeviewecho.com) — Paterson's drinking water is at the center of a new federal and state lawsuit accusing the Passaic Valley Water Commission of failing to adequately protect three uncovered reservoirs that serve about 800,000 people. Officials say stormwater and other contamination have caused past advisories and elevated lead levels, and they're now seeking court-ordered fixes, public notification, and daily penalties until the system is brought into full compliance.

2. Paterson Council Endorses Sewer Approval for Planned $150M Passaic County Government Complex (tapinto.net) — Paterson's City Council has signed off on sewer approvals needed for Passaic County's planned $150 million government complex at the former jail site on Marshall Street. The project will add new sewer connections but was found to fit within the city's capacity, while promising to centralize key county services like social services, elections, passports, and probation in Paterson.

3. Paterson Approves $6.25M Trash Collection Contract Through 2027 (tapinto.net) — Paterson has locked in a $6.25 million contract to keep regular household trash collection running through the end of 2027, while leaving bulk pickup handled by city crews for now. Council members raised concerns about overtime, staffing, and long waits for bulk pickups, and officials signaled that major changes could come when the next solid waste contract is rebid.

4. Close to Home: New Paterson Police Officers Tout Connections to Community (tapinto.net) — Twenty-five new officers have just been sworn into the Paterson Police Department, including two with deep family and business ties to the city who say they want to strengthen trust with residents. City leaders stressed respect, integrity, and community service, while the new officers hope to change perceptions of law enforcement and inspire more local women and young people to consider policing careers.
