Attorney General Investigating Police Involved Shooting in Mercer County

A state trooper and a county sheriff's officer shot and wounded a 14-year-old in Trenton Friday night.

The Attorney General is investigating an incident in which a New Jersey State Trooper and a Mercer County Sheriff’s Officer shot and wounded a 14-year-old boy late Friday night.

Two state troopers and a county sheriff’s officer responded to the vicinity of 500 Prospect Village in Trenton for reports of multiple shots fired at about 10:15 p.m.

Police stopped three males they saw heading to Calhoun Street from Louise Lane on foot. Two of the young men stopped, but a 14-year-old allegedly kept running.

One of the troopers and the sheriff’s officer chased after the boy while the other trooper stayed with the two who had stopped, police said.

While he was being chased, the boy allegedly reached into his waistband. Both officers fired at the boy, hitting him in both legs and the buttocks. The boy was treated at the scene and taken to Helene Fuld Medical Center in Trenton, where he remained in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

Police say a .22 caliber automatic handgun containing three rounds of ammunition was later recovered beneath a car at the scene on Calhoun Street.

The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team is investigating the incident. The identities of the state troopers and the sheriff’s officer involved were not released, and the identity of the 14-year-old boy was not released because he’s a juvenile.
