Goat Hill Overlook, Key Reconnassaince Point for Gen'l Washington

Alluring wooded trail that gently rises to Washington's Viewpoint high above the Delaware River, right before Battles of Trenton

People who go onto www.drgreenway.org and ask to be put onto the Constant Contact Mailing list are being treated to a series of image-rich communications, reminding everyone that (most of) our preserves are open, with social distancing and face coverings.

Nature awaits us, ever-ready to nourish, heal and even console. Here's today's trail alert, with two Goat Hill images, one in autumn, one oddly enough in winter. The thirteen-star flag is to remind us that it is almost the Fourth of July - the original meaning of which would not have been attained without Goat Hill Overlook just before Christmas, 1776.

I send along D&R Greenway's Trail Text this day - our brief Constant Contact alert to spectacular (not long enough!) trek to the pinnacle.

From this site, General Washington carried out reconnaissance before crossing our Delaware to Trenton victories, the Princeton victory, the renewal of 'The Spirit of '76; and, ultimately a country dedicated to liberty...

"In military operations, reconnaissance or scouting is the exploration outside an area occupied by friendly forces to gain information about natural features and other activities in area."

Think on it: without this vantage point and that river below, we would not have a country!

Goat Hill Preserve, below Lambertville, offers one of the most stunning views in our region, high above the Delaware River, separating New Jersey form Pennsylvania. Now owned by NJ State Parks, the land was owned by a quarry company until D&R Greenway approached the company about preservation. The NJ Green Acres Program purchased the land for permanent protection.

Watch for a special announcement Wednesday about a virtual event that will allow you to learn more about Goat Hill's preservation.

"The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing."

- John Muir

The Delaware River was named 2020 River of the Year by the non-profit group American Rivers, based on the dramatic progress that has been made in conservation by groups like D&R Greenway.

(If you're on the e-mail list, you will have received the real thing, and could "watch short video below then see it yourself from Goat Hill.)

You can find many more wonderful preserves on our website.

Important:

Remember social distancing - 6 feet for low-risk groups, and 10 feet

for high-risk groups (age 60 and/or with underlying health condition).

If trail is busy, be extra careful to maintain social distancing.

We all are in need of the outdoors for our health and well-being.
