Help Princeton Save Energy and Keep It Cool
This summer, a new campaign is encouraging stores to keep their doors closed while running the air conditioning to save energy.

During the summertime and for the back to school shopping season, it’s common to see stores in Princeton with their door propped open, streaming the cold air conditioning outside. These open doors are wasting a lot of energy. This costly habit pollutes the atmosphere with 2.2 tons of carbon dioxide and other substances into the air each summer.
To help stop this wasteful practice, the nonprofit Generation180 created the Keep It Cool campaign to decrease retail energy waste across communities nationwide. Participating in the Keep It Cool campaign is easy and anonymous! Princeton residents can use Facebook Messenger to contact Generation 180 and drop a pin on a map when they see a retailer’s door open or closed. From there, Generation 180 will reach out to the retailer with energy saving tips and best practices.
Local resident and active leader in the Citizen’s Climate Lobby, Callie Hancock has been frustrated for years by local stores that keep their doors open while running the air conditioning. After writing letters and speaking with store managers, she is excited to participate in a campaign that helps reduce this “energy littering” in her community.

Callie has used Keep It Cool to tag stores in Princeton. “I have found it pretty intuitive,” she says. “In the last couple of weeks since I started using it, I see more closed doors in stores that used to be offenders. I feel more optimistic.”
