Residents Wants Princeton to Remain Neutral on University's Tax Exemption Lawsuit

The town has been named as a defendant.

A Princeton resident is calling on the town to remain neutral when it comes to a lawsuit concerning the University’s tax-exempt status, Planet Princeton reports.

Dale Meade also called on members of council to avoid conflicts of interest and for the town to attempt to be removed as a defendant in the lawsuit, according to the report.

He made his comments during the public portion of a meeting held on Monday in Meeting Room A of Witherspoon Hall, 400 Witherspoon Street.

Following the public comment portion, council went into closed session. Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert, whose husband works for the University, and Councilwoman Heather Howard, a University employee, didn’t participate in the meeting, according to the report.

A lawsuit that challenges the tax-exempt status of some of the University’s buildings that are used for commercial use, such as eateries, has been filed by some residents.

The University is also being accused of acting like a for-profit institution, including holding a licensing agreement for a chemotherapy drug.
